MATRIMONI/WEDDINGS
La Chiesa Protestante Episcopale celebra matrimoni tra persone di sesso diverso e tra persone dello stesso sesso. Nel caso che, all’interno della coppia vi sia una persona transessuale o transgender, la Chiesa lascerà alla coppia la libertà di definire la propria unione oppure di registrarla con lo stesso genere dei documenti civili.
Per scelta del Sinodo Generale e nell’ottica della separazione tra Stato e Chiese, tali cerimonie hanno valore solo religioso e non civile: per la teologia protestante il matrimonio non è un sacramento e si tratta pertanto della benedizione religiosa di un atto civile, anche se in alcuni casi si può procedere solo alla benedizione religiosa.
I requisiti per accedere alla celebrazione del matrimonio religioso sono:
- appartenenza alla nostra Chiesa o altra Chiesa evangelica (italiana o estera) di almeno uno dei due sposi (in casi particolari e documentati il Consiglio Parrocchiale può valutare anche coppie in cui almeno uno dei due sposi sia almeno battezzato in una qualunque Chiesa cristiana trinitaria o manifesti l’interesse a farsi battezzare prima del matrimonio stesso);
- documenti che attestino l’avvenuto matrimonio o unione in sede civile (salvo casi particolari);
- dichiarazione degli sposi che si impegnano in una educazione cristiana (non necessariamente confessionale) per la eventuale prole;
- corso pre-matrimoniale e/o colloqui con il parroco.
Per prendere accordi è necessario contattare le comunità locali o la segreteria dell’Arcivescovo (arcivescovo@chiesaprotestante-episcopale.org).
In caso di controversie o particolari situazioni è il Consiglio Parrocchiale locale che, sentito il parroco, prende una decisione, salvo i casi d’appello e le dispense ottenute presso l’Arcivescovo Primate.

The Protestant Episcopal Church celebrates marriages between people of different sexes and between people of the same sex. In the event that there is a transsexual or transgender person within the couple, the Church will leave the couple the freedom to define their union or to register it with the same gender as in civil documents.
By choice of the General Synod and in the perspective of the separation between State and Churches, these ceremonies have only religious and not civil value: for Protestant theology, marriage is not a sacrament and is therefore the religious blessing of a civil act, even if in some cases only the religious blessing can be performed.
The requirements for accessing the celebration of a religious marriage are:
- belonging to our Church or another Evangelical Church (Italian or foreign) of at least one of the two spouses (in special and documented cases the Parish Council can also evaluate couples in which at least one of the two spouses is at least baptized in any Trinitarian Christian Church or expresses an interest in being baptized before the marriage itself);
- documents certifying the marriage or civil union (except in special cases);
- declaration of the spouses that they are committed to a Christian education (not necessarily confessional) for any child;
- pre-marriage course and/or interviews with the parish priest.
To make arrangements it is necessary to contact the local communities or the Archbishop’s secretariat (arcivescovo@chiesaprotestante-episcopale.org).
In the event of disputes or particular situations, it is the local Parish Council that, after consulting the parish priest, makes a decision, except in cases of appeal and dispensations obtained from the Archbishop Primate.
